Headache and Neck Pain Relief

transparent purple spineThere are many types of headaches. Regardless of the cause, if you have a headache, you want it to end. Fast!

This has produced a huge market for medications that cover up the symptoms of headaches. Powerful drugs can numb your body so you can’t feel the pain. The cause of the headache is still present. You’ve merely fooled your body.

While this approach is convenient, it can cause side effects. Even kidney or liver damage.

A common cause of headaches is from spinal bones in the neck that aren’t supporting your head properly.

Your neck is the most vulnerable part of your spine. Not only does it support your 4.5 to 5 kg head, maintain a gentle forward curve, and permit head rotation, but it must allow the free flow of nerve impulses to and from your brain and body.

Most of the pain-sensing nerves in the neck are located in the pairs of facet joints on the backside of each vertebra. These smooth, interlocking surfaces allow you to rotate your head from left to right and to bend your head up and down. If these joints become locked or fixated, neck pain or headaches can result.

A thorough examination can determine if you’re a good candidate for chiropractic care. These tests may involve your ability to turn and bend. Muscle tone of the supporting muscles in the neck may be tested. Diagnostic imaging to reveal the underlying structure of the spine may be needed. These and other tests are designed to identify the cause and location of your neck pain.

Our primary form of care will be a series of chiropractic adjustments. We may use our hands or a small hand instrument to help bring wayward spinal bones into proper alignment. As we do, nerve interference is often reduced and headaches or other symptoms usually subside.

If you’ve had spinal misalignments for some time, there can be bone spurs, disc thinning and other forms of spinal decay. These types of problems respond more slowly, and some type of ongoing supportive chiropractic care may be recommended.
